IP68 Outdoor Lighting · Australian Conditions

Not waterproof. Submersible.

Outdoor LED strip lighting — sealed end to end, rated for permanent water contact. Salt air, pool chemicals, Queensland summers. Built for all of it.

The problem

Why most outdoor strip lighting fails in Australia.

01

IP65/66 is not enough.

Most imported strip lighting is rated IP65 or IP66 — dust and splash resistant. That's adequate indoors. Outdoors in Australia, it isn't. Water finds its way in through connector joints, end caps, and micro-cracks in the silicone sleeve. IP65/66 fails in conditions that IP68 handles without issue.

02

UV and heat degrade standard silicone.

Australian summer UV intensity is among the highest in the world. Standard silicone sleeves yellow, crack, and allow moisture ingress within 18–24 months. The failure isn't the LEDs — it's the housing that was never rated for the exposure.

03

Connector corrosion is the silent killer.

Coastal properties add salt air to the equation. Unprotected connectors corrode at the contact points. Voltage drops. Sections go dark. The strip looks fine — the connectors aren't. Sealed end-to-end means sealed from the driver to the terminal — the full system is submersible, not just the strip.

Orenara is fully submersible — end to end.

Dust-tight and submersion-rated (IP68, 1.5m for 30 minutes). Every component in the system — strip, connectors, end caps — carries the same rating. Not just the strip itself. That's what proper outdoor-rated means.

IP68. SUBMERGED. OPERATING.

The Difference

Most strip lighting is waterproof until it rains.

Sealed silicone, end to end. No seams, no glued joints, no ingress path. Orenara strip is fully submersible, permanently — rated IP68 end to end. Garden beds that flood, pool edges that splash, coastal frontages that cop salt and summer storms. It runs through all of it because it was specced for exactly that.

Environments

Built for where lighting actually fails.

Six conditions that kill cheap outdoor strip lighting. One spec that doesn't change for any of them.

Commercial & Hospitality outdoor LED lighting application at dusk

Commercial & Hospitality

Higher use, same standard — not a lesser one.

Resorts, hospitality venues, strata common areas, and public/council pathways get more daily use and less forgiving maintenance schedules than a private home. The spec doesn't change for commercial application — it's the same fully submersible system (IP68), the same 0–10V dimming, the same RCM-compliant components, just specified at scale for a larger site.

Pool & Aquatic outdoor LED lighting application at dusk

Pool & Aquatic

Permanent water contact, not occasional splash.

Pool edges, water features, and submerged garden elements don't get wet occasionally — they're wet constantly, and often chemically treated. This is the application most outdoor lighting was never actually built for, IP65/66 ratings included. It's fully submersible — rated for permanent water contact, not splash resistance dressed up as waterproofing (IP68: 1.5m for 30 minutes, dust-tight).

Marina & Private Berths outdoor LED lighting application at dusk

Marina & Private Berths

Timber decking, constant moisture, zero forgiveness for corrosion.

Private berths and marina walkways combine every hard condition at once — salt air, direct water exposure, and timber decking that expands and contracts with the weather. It's an unforgiving install for standard connectors. Orenara's fully submersible sealed system (IP68) and segmented track hold a clean line along a pontoon edge the same way they hold a garden path — same spec, same rating, harder setting.

Coastal outdoor LED lighting application at dusk

Coastal

Salt air doesn't announce itself. It just corrodes.

Properties within a few kilometres of the coast carry salt air year-round, not just on windy days. It gets into connector joints that look sealed but aren't, corroding contact points from the inside. Voltage drops. Sections go dark months before anyone notices why. Orenara's connectors are sealed end-to-end — driver to terminal — submersible-rated to the same standard as the strip itself (IP68), not treated as an afterthought.

Tropical & Humid outdoor LED lighting application at dusk

Tropical & Humid

Queensland summer doesn't wait for a warranty claim.

Australian UV intensity is among the highest in the world, and monsoon-season humidity compounds it. Standard silicone sleeves yellow, crack, and let moisture in within 18–24 months — well before most warranty periods even matter. The failure isn't the LEDs themselves; it's housing that was rated for a milder climate than the one it's actually installed in.

Rural & Acreage outdoor LED lighting application at dusk

Rural & Acreage

Dust, heat swings, and runs longer than anyone plans for.

Acreage, rural driveways, and fence-line runs face problems the suburbs don't — fine dust that works into any gap, day-to-night temperature swings that expand and contract cheap housing until it cracks, and cable runs long enough that a single weak joint takes out the whole line. The 6 in IP68 means dust-tight, not just water-resistant — sealed against the grit that quietly kills lesser strip long before the LEDs ever wear out.

Built for the conditions Australian coastal, tropical, and commercial properties actually face — salt air, permanent water contact, and monsoon humidity. Not oil rigs, not naval vessels, not mining sites. If your project needs marine-vessel or defense-grade certification beyond IP68, tell us upfront — we'll be straight with you about whether we're the right fit.

Whatever the environment, the system is the same — sealed, submersible, built to order.

The mounting system

Straight lines are easy. Curves are the hard part.

Any strip lights up fine in a straight run. The hard part — the part most products get wrong — is a curve that still looks intentional five years in.

For straight lines

Rigid Channel

  • Aluminium channel with click-in strip mounting.
  • For pergola beams, benchtops and straight garden edges — anywhere the line doesn't need to bend.
  • Zero flex, zero risk of the strip sagging or pulling loose over time.
For curves

Flexible Segmented Track

This is the part that actually matters. Most “flexible” strip lighting just relies on the silicone sleeve bending — no structure, no consistent radius. It shows: uneven light spacing at the bend, visible strain points, and a strip that slowly works itself loose from whatever clip was holding it.

  • Segmented specifically to bend into a clean, consistent radius — garden paths, pool edges, curved pergola lines.
  • The strip clicks directly into the track. Mechanically secured, not resting in a channel and hoping.
  • Same strip, same connectors, same IP68 rating end to end as the rigid channel.

Horizontal bend only. This isn't a garden hose — it won't loop vertically, and we won't tell you it does.

SEGMENTED TRACK. CONSISTENT RADIUS. NO STRAIN POINTS.

Pick your mounting system based on the geometry of your space, not the limitations of the product. Straight run: rigid channel. Curve: segmented track. Both take the same strip, same connectors, same IP68 rating end to end.

Technical specification

Getting the fundamentals right.

Three specifications that determine whether outdoor lighting lasts two years or ten. Most products get at least one wrong.

IEC 60529 · IP68

Dust-tight. Submersion-rated.

IP68 is the highest standard ingress protection rating defined under IEC 60529. It means completely dust-tight and rated for continuous submersion — in our case, 1.5m depth for 30 minutes. Not splash-resistant. Submersion-rated. The difference matters when a garden irrigation system floods the installation zone or a pool edge takes splash loading daily.

0–10V ANALOGUE PROTOCOL

Smooth, flicker-free. Professional-grade.

0–10V is an analogue dimming protocol used in commercial and architectural lighting. It delivers smooth, linear dimming from 0% to 100% without PWM flicker — the high-frequency on/off switching that causes eye strain and shows up on camera. Cheap PWM dimmers flicker at 1,000–20,000Hz. You may not see it directly. Your camera will. And some people can feel it. 0–10V eliminates the problem entirely.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE MARK

Australian regulatory compliance.

RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark) is the current Australian and New Zealand mark for electrical equipment compliance. It replaced the old 'SAA' mark. Products entering the Australian market are required to bear the RCM mark if they're electrical goods. Some importers still reference SAA certification — that designation was retired in 2016. Orenara components carry current RCM compliance.
